Course Tips to Stay Cool In the Summer Sun

Friday, August 13th, 2010

This summer has had record setting highs, creating sweltering heat indexes and nearly unbearable conditions for Grand Strand golf courses.  Here are some great tips to help you enjoy your favorite game during the dog days of summer.

  1. See if the course has cooler rentals
  2. Ask if they have Beverage cart serviceGolfing in the heat
  3. Ask if when making the turn if the clubhouse is near by
  4. Find out if water coolers are available on the course and how often you will come to one.
  5. Book early tee times, usually the first tee time is at 7am, you will beat the afternoon sun.
  6. Pack a towel or bandana. This way you can get a cooler or bag of ice pack your towel in ice. This is a great relief and a quick cool down.
  7. Before you tee off stop by the snack bar and load up on Gatorade, bottle water and ice. While you are out on the course the beverage cart will be able to keep you ice replenished.
  8. Check the summer menu. The heat may deter you from wanting to eat anything heavy. Here at The Pearl Tonya has designed some great lunch specials that are quick and cool for summer play.

California Burger

A lightly season burger topped with American cheese, grilled onions and tomatoes served on toasted wheat.

Cool Ranch Chicken Wrap

Tip from the Pro: How to Read Grain in the Greens

Monday, July 19th, 2010

By: Jimmy Biggs, General Manager/Head Pro

How do I read grain in the greens?Bentgrass at The Pearl

First I have to understand what kind of putting surface that I’m putting on.  The two most common putting surfaces in golf courses near Myrtle Beach area are Bent and Bermuda grass.  The Pearl East and West Course are L93 Bentgrass.  Bent grass often has a very negligible amount of grain so I won’t count on it influencing my putt.  Bermuda grass however has a broader blade which can influence the direction and speed of a putt.

There are a couple of ways to read the grain.  One way is to look for the shine on the greens.  If the green is shiny the grain is going away from you and the putt will be fast.  A darker surface means the grain is coming towards you and the putt will be slower.

The other way to read the grain is to look for nearby water as water drainage can affect the grain.  Prevailing winds can also affect grain on ocean courses.  The most important thing you need to understand is that grain will have very little effect on the speed or the line of the putt until the ball begins to slow down from your initial strike.  If you read the grain at all into your line, account for the grain to take effect in the last 1 or 2 feet.
